In working directly with Kevin Baker (Deputy Chief Counsel of the Assembly Judiciary Committee), the actual writer of AB 590, ALDAP has resolved the issues we have with the proposed language. After reading ALDAP's letter opposing the proposed legislation, Mr. Baker called me directly this afternoon. He thanked ALDAP for bringing the obvious oversight to his attention. While Feuer is the author of AB 590, Baker is the writer. He apologized for overlooking B&P 6400 (c) - the legal self-help statutes - and assured me that the legislators "in no way, meant to prohibit LDAs from doing the much necessary and good work" that we do for California's consumers.
Mr. Baker requested that ALDAP review the amendment to AB 590 that he will be writing over the weekend and will provide to me Monday via email.
By the way, ALDAP members can stand proud. Mr. Baker complimented ALDAP on bringing the oversight to his and Feuer's attention. We may be small but we are mighty!

Girl, you single-handedly saved our profession. I can't thank you enough!
Aw jeez, Suzanne! You are too sweet. It would have never come to my attention had you not cracked the whip at me to write my articles. I am just surprised that nobody else knew this bill existed! So much for professional lobbyists - it just takes one person to effectuate change! I am "over the top" today and look forward to a weekend of amendments.
Kat;
You are the one. One of a 'keen eye' (and intellect) as I have always known you to be... Good find, even letting the legislators know whats in their own - before it becomes law; and to save the whole of CA LDA's community a bunch of grief and extra unnecessary work - because you take notice, you communicate with the source; and because of your follow up... Your The Best!
Keep it Up...
Nice save Kat!
Our law makers never cease to amaze me in the way they are reactive instead of proactive, it reminds me of the big software companies, be the first to market, make a name and we will deal with the problems (bugs) later.
If this had slipped through, what a blow it would have been to LDA’s and California’s consumers. Once they had realized their mistake, how long would it have taken to rectify the issue?
The California Legislator could use more people like you watching out for the California consumer. Keep up the fantastic work!
Thanks for your efforts ALDAP. Never would have known about this until too late. I am impressed that you found this law before it was too late. Are they trying to get rid of document preparers in California?
Thank you Kat and Suzanne for your work. The rest of us owe you a debt of gratitude. Karen H.
